FootballAS Roma Captain Lorenzo Pellegrini Questions Romelu Lukaku Transfer As Chelsea Flop Nears Move
- Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku is nearing a season-long loan move to AS Roma
- He will reunite with Jose Mourinho and is expected to replace another Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham
- Roma captain Lorenzo Pellegrini was asked about the move, and he confirmed it as a work in progress
AS Roma captain Lorenzo Pellegrini was asked about Romelu Lukaku's season-long loan move to the club, and his response appears to question the necessity of the transfer.
Lukaku and Chelsea agreed to part ways this season after having a chaotic relationship since the striker re-signed for the Blues from Inter Milan in 2021.
He spent last season on loan at San Siro and looked set to return permanently, but his flirting with Juventus and ghosting calls from the board and former teammates ended the move.
The Blues softened their stance on a permanent move and agreed on a loan move to Rome after Juventus were taking too long to send in a bid despite the player favouring them.
Pellegrini questions Lukaku's move
Roma lost their second game of the season 2-1 to Hellas Verona, as a spirited second-half performance could not spare the blushes of a scandalous defensive display in the first half.
Captain Pellegrini nearly secured a point for his side after rattling the bar with a freekick. He spoke to DAZN after the game about the potential transfer of Lukaku and confirmed it's a work in progress via Football Italia.
“I don’t know what Lukaku would bring, but there are those who are working to make it happen. When it will be done, then we’ll see what he can bring, otherwise it’s like talking about any player in the world,” he said.
According to The Telegraph, both clubs are close to an agreement on a fee of around £8-9m, while the player is expected to take a wage cut to around £7m per year.

FootballMourinho's old comments on Lukaku
Sports Brief reported Jose Mourinho's old comments on Lukaku after it emerged the Belgian striker had accepted the Italian capital as his next destination.
Mourinho briefly managed the striker at Chelsea and then at Manchester United. He made a disparity between the two times and claimed despite becoming a man, there is still a kid in the man who needs love.
